Minna's Post
Yesterday the whole fifth grade class, including me, went to the garden with Mrs.Woods our teacher. We all did a short job. For example, I trimmed the big branches off the fig tree with my friends. There were some fresh vegetables in the garden including broccoli. We all got to take some and eat it, if we wanted to. We also got to take home mint and basil. Getting to work in the garden is a very fun thing to do and I feel very privileged to be able to work there with my teacher and my class. In my opinion, working in the garden is a very enjoyable way to be able to go outside.
Freedom is like...
On the first day of school our class theme was introduced: freedom. We did two mind activities to begin unpacking this huge concept. The first was "synectics," making connections from freedom's traits to different concepts with the same traits, and ultimately connecting back to freedom. Then students wrote about when they feel most free.
"I feel free when I get to relax in a peaceful spot, like on a couch or something." -Nina
"Freedom is like a baby because they are both soft, smooth, and flawless."- Noa

How would you explain what math is to an alien?
The challenge was that students could not use math terminology in their explanations.
"Math is a way of understanding how things work in the world."
-Noam, Annette, and Minna
"Math is a form of figuring out problems in life."
-Jonah, Elie, and Matan
